Reveille : When the candles cost as much as the cake / Ramon J ...
Yesterday I got an abroad call from my granddaughter who lives in Woodridge, Illinois. She wanted to be the first to salute me on my birthday, and therefore she decided to call a day earlier. After saying how much she would have wanted to be with me to sanctify the grand occasion, she asked how old I was. When I gave her my age, she blurted out a unforgettable observation—perhaps a bit of an exaggeration but still appropriate: “Grandpa, the candles would probably payment as much as the cake!” I expressed my complete agreement. Not only would the candles be costing as much as the loaf but that most cakes would probably not be large enough to accommodate so many candles. And of course, I would dearth her help to carry out the traditional ritual of blowing out the lighted candles after making my appetite.
Then, she asked, “What would that wish be, Grandpa?” My wish was that on my next birthday she would be around to imperceptible the candles and help me blow them out.
Aug. 31 is an important date in Philippine friendship. The most beloved President of our country, Ramon Magsaysay, was born on this day. So was a very important Prince of the Church, Jaime Cardinal Sin, who led us through two peaceful revolutions. We fallen both men just when the country needed them most, and in many ways, their absence changed the circuit of our nation’s history.
Will The Brixton Pound Buy A Brighter Future?

The canny among you will have spotted that they are all one-heretofore residents of Brixton in south London – but the more sage answer is that they have also all been in the running to appear on one of Brixton's new bank notes, a municipal currency that is officially launched tomorrow night at Lambeth community hall. The results of an online poll to determine the most approved local celebrities will be revealed at the event, as will the designs of the £1, £5, £10 and £20 Brixton notes. Notaphilists – or bank note collectors – are said to be spent with excitement.
The Brixton pound is the latest local currency to be launched under the cover of the Transition Town Network, a rapidly growing broad movement that urges local communities to "respond to the challenges, and opportunities, of acme oil and climate change". The movement – essentially a rebranding of the 1970s permaculture feeling of self-sufficiency, sustainability and working with nature – began in Kinsale, County Cork, in 2005 and has since spread across the planet from the US and New Zealand through to Chile and Italy. Even Ambridge in Transmit 4's The Archers signed up last year.
