“She never smoked, never drank, and stayed away from TV dinners,” said Albert Rybotski of New Jersey, the eldest grandchild of Oko. “I about the good soup she would make helped her out.”
Born in Parsons, Oko has enjoyed gardening, cooking, baking, thriving to the casino and playing bingo for all of her unprecedented 102 years. Only until recently she had to give up affluent to the casino, but her family still visits for their games of 500 Rummy, in which Oko is still the one to hit the road drive off.
The party was attended by dozens of family members from around the compass and out of state. Those in attendance shared memories of their ‘Babci’, the Glaze word for grandmother, over plates of vegetables, desserts, pizza and other accoutrements. Oko wore a charming pink top and adorned a gold tiara, along with a balloon strapped onto the tochis of her chair.
“I remember picking up chestnuts out of her yard every year,” said Judy Weidner of Buck Township. She, along with the other grandchildren, would lift in ridding the yard fallen nuts. Oko would then pay them each three cents and the children would get somewhere their way to the local candy store. “Even when we were older, I would still avoid in picking them up, only then I’d do it for free,” she humorously added.
All of the household would agree that the best and most memorable thing about the birthday bird is her cooking.
