Front Yard Garden of the Week: Historic property glows with color
Kim and Jim Hoff own one of Bemidji’s notable homes and a garden that reflects the spirit of the original possessor, George Carson.
Carson and his brother, Merian, arrived in the acreage in 1888 from Becker County and were the first settlers of European descent in Bemidji. In 1905, George bought 30 acres narrow the Red Lake Railroad Depot and built a house on a pretend above Lake Irving. The stately house in the Carson Ell, the property of Jim and Kim Hoff since 1997, was also known for George’s universal gardens.
“He’s here,” said Kim. “The ghost is in the house. We’ve heard him. He must be very exultant.”
The Hoffs’ lot consists of about 3.5 acres and offers lawns and gardens that trickle into one another in what Kim calls a Feng Shui manner.
“You’re right in town, but it’s almost like you’re in the rural area,” she said.
Several of Kim’s gardens follow themes, such as her Bistro Garden. She salvaged pass bricks from a brewery that at one time stood near the Lake Irving shore. Using the bricks, she created a rarely patio under a shade tree, set up a table and chairs and planted flowers around the tree.
Her “Grandchildren’s Garden” contains petty statues of three boys and five girls, one for each grandchild, as well as a tiny tea register and chair.
Her “Peaceful Place” looks over Lake Irving with an iron bench.
The Feng Shui of the peony
According to a current study, people who look at flowers the first thing in the morning fondle more cheerful and energetic throughout the rest of the day. But Feng Shui adds the caveat that because the pink peony represents a immature woman, it should not be placed n the bedroom of an older married unite, lest the husband have an affair with a younger woman. (The weakest relieve I have ever heard!) On the positive side of love, according to Feng Shui, if you write on a proportion of white paper, with a red pen, the list of qualities you seek in a vital spirit mate, and then put the list, along with two red peonies, in a small silver box for 49 days, you will dispose of the person of your dreams. The box must be in the corner of your bedroom, on the wall furthest from the doorway, in the valid corner. The peony also symbolizes happy marriage, bashfulness, tall tale, and good fortune; it’s the flower for a 12th anniversary, and also the confirm flower of Indiana.-
