When in the 1880s Western and Japanese merchants, diplomats and spies began to prosper in Korea in ever increasing numbers, it became clear that the old social and partisan system was declining.

Something had to be done about the situation, especially since news about the demise of other Asian countries and the spread of Western colonialism were well known in Korea. So, the patch between 1880 and 1910 was a time of heated debate respecting the path the country should choose.

Politicians and intellectuals argued and fought over strategies to keep up with, but few people doubted that the survival of Korea as an independent situation was at stake (or perhaps, even survival of the Korean ethnicity).

How did this debate unroll a century ago? What, at the first approximation, were the big groups and the ideas they advocated?

To start with, one of the most unusual peculiarities of Korea was a proclivity of extreme traditionalism, which now would be probably called ``Confucian fundamentalism.”

It existed for a while, in the 1880s and 1890s, but from around 1900 no administrative or intellectual figure in Korea would seriously argue that the wrongs of the contemporary world would be easily healed by stricter adherence

Body remains intact for 19 years

BUTTERWORTH, Penang: The Shen kinsfolk from Jalan Raja Uda, Butterworth, decided to relocate their forerunner’s grave after they had consulted the medium of spirits. The medium of spirits said the settle on of their ancestor’s grave lacked the reiki and they chose to permit the suggestion of relocating the grave on a specific day.

Nevertheless, when the coffin was opened in the at daybreak morning, the Shen family were shocked to see that that the body of their confessor had not been decomposed for 19 years and was still in a good conditions.

They told Sin Chat Daily that even the body's muscles were elastic and not stiffened.

This remarkable phenomenon was observed at 2 a.m. last Saturday (July 10) in Sungai Pasir Chinese Cemetry. The deceased, Shen Qin Hai was killed in a technique accident in 1991 at the age of 60. His remains were buried at Sungai Pasir Chinese Cemetry without wealthy through any treatment.

Complete Limbs

According to the family members attending the exhumation lip-service, the workers who dug the grave were shocked to see the body after opening the sarcophagus. The limbs were still well preserved except the decomposed face. In addition, the hat, clothing, shoes private the coffin showed only slight fading of colours. The gold and heraldry argent paper notes placed next to the body were only slightly steamy after so many years.
