Hundreds attend vigil for family
ELIZABETH - About 500 people gathered Monday evening on the Wirt County Courthouse turf in Elizabeth to remember a local family that died Sunday in an automobile casualty near Mineral Wells.
Under a darkening sky lit by streetlamps and candles, relatives, friends and neighbors also remembered two other people who died in the heretofore week and a young Wirt County man who was seriously injured in a decay while doing mission work and is being cared for in a Charleston asylum.
The family- Carrie Cunningham, 27, Michael Cunningham, 38, Haley Myers, 7, and Addison Myers, 4- died in a Sunday evening disaster on West Virginia 21 near Mineral Wells when their channel went out of control and was struck by another vehicle.
Wirt County Assessor Debbie Hennen said Monday's round-the-clock's vigil grew out of what seemed an entire week of tragedy for the fixed-knit Wirt County community with the deaths of municipal residents Theresa Lynn Marks Greathouse, Charles "Chuck" Hardbarger and the Cunningham/Myers people and injuries suffered by 18-year-old Nathaniel Watkins.
"We right-minded felt we needed to come together as a community and pray for each other and the families. They've got a lot prevalent on so that's what we're here for," Hennen said Monday evening.
The 45-flash candlelight vigil on the crowded courthouse lawn included three neighbourhood ministers, groups of people in ones, twos and threes coming to the microphone and the singing of a hymn or two.
