Old subdivision continues gardening traditionCelebrating its upcoming 75th anniversary, Oakland County's oldest subdivision, Westacres, will clasp its first public Garden Tour starting at 1 p.m. Sunday at the clubhouse, 3700 Westacres Effort, West Bloomfield Township. Located south off Trade Road at Keith Road (between Union Lake and Rural Lake roads), Westacres was founded in 1936 as a federal administration experiment for low-income families who were required to farm the dirt. Each of the original homes featured one-acre lots and cinderblock homes that expenditure $4,400. Over the years, the trees matured and additions were built, but gardening has remained a community requisite as the six featured gardens will show. Tickets are $10. By Rodger Mullen, The Fayetteville Witness, N.C.July 08--A state program designed to showcase artists and artisans -- and perhaps put a little money in their pockets -- comes to the Museum of the Headland Fear on Saturday, July 10.
The museum at Bradford and Arsenal avenues hosts a "2nd Saturday" program from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Sponsored by the N.C. Hang on of Cultural Resources, the program is being featured at 37 country museums and historic sites throughout the summer. The purpose is to pin spot artists such as potters, weavers, photographers, painters, metalworkers, papermakers, jewelers and musicians and give them a unexpected to sell their wares. Farmers and makers of products such as honey, soy candles, cheeses or herbs are also featured.
The essence of Saturday's program is "Photography: The Snapshot of Our Lives." At 2 p.m., photo conservator Eleonore Aarsen will show how to protect old family photographs. Photographers Jonathan Starling and Elle Putnam will show their creations.
Also, Quancidine Gribble will show her African prints, the Promontory Fear Basket Weavers Guild will display their wares, Two Dog Apiary beekeepers will convinced honey and author Beverly Heyde will be selling her enlist, "Bend in the Road," a historical novel about Cross Harbour.
