BP's Broken Window
15.07.10
, Created a comparable parable about a broken window. In Bastiat's tale, a man's son breaks a glass of glass, meaning the man will have to pay to replace it. The onlookers consider the predicament and decide that the boy has actually done the community a service because his father will have to pay the glazier to restore the broken pane. The glazier will then presumably spend the surcharge money on something else, jump-starting the local economy. (Announce Understanding Supply-Side Economics to for another attempted method of mercantile recovery.)
The onlookers come to believe that breaking windows stimulates the briefness, but, as Bastiat points out, a further analysis exposes the fallacy. By breaking the window, the man's son has reduced his old man's disposable income, meaning his father will not purchase new shoes or some other commodity. Thus, the contravened window might help the glazier but it robs other industries and reduces the amount being fagged out other goods. Moreover, replacing something already purchased is a maintenance cost, rather than a purchasing of truly new goods - maintenance doesn't stimulate opus in the same way as pure demand. In short, Bastiat shows that rubbing out doesn't pay.
