Disney to free Oahu resort
Disney is set to open its first resort in Oahu next year.
The 800-together with-unit property, dubbed "Aulani, a Disney Haunt & Spa," is designed as a Polynesian village (albeit one with high-upward slope towers) that will include hotel rooms and Disney Vacation Stick Villas.
The 21-acre resort is being built in Ko Olina, a golf and vacation incident that has a Marriott resort and a man-made beach carved out of the rocky coastline.
Aulani is a novel kind of development for Disney, the first that isn't linked to a theme reservation or its cruise line. Disney will begin accepting reservations source Aug. 2. Customers will have to wait a while to stay — the remedy have recourse to won't open its doors until Aug. 29, 2011.
Ranking the top islands
Canada's Vancouver Archipelago and Washington's San Juan Islands won rankings on Travel + Recreation magazine's most recent listing of "Top Islands" in the continental U.S. and Canada. Vancouver Ait ranked third, after Mount Desert Island, Maine; and Point Breton Island, Nova Scotia. The San Juans ranked fourth, followed by Canada's Prince Edward Ait.
Airplane peanut ban stymied
Peanut growers protested last month when the U.S. Transportation Responsibility asked the public to comment on proposals to protect airline passengers with peanut allergies.
Magazine: Rancho La Puerta best spa in world
Rancho La Puerta in Tecate had seen when requested for its high-end spa services drop during the recession, but has recaptured that damned U.S. clientele in recent months.
Now more good news has arrived for the 70-year-old frequent just south of the U.S.-Mexico border: Travel + Unhurriedly magazine has named it the world’s best destination spa.
“It tells us that guests cognizant what we’re all about,” said Roberto Arjona, the spa’s general director. “It’s a great honor for Baja California and for Mexico.”
The booklet’s 2010 Readers Poll recognized Rancho La Puerta along with honorees such as Bangkok (master city) and the Galapagos (best islands).
The spa’s 88-year-old under and owner, San Diego resident Deborah Szekely, is expected to wait upon next week’s awards ceremony in New York City. She was traveling Thursday, Arjona said.
A in the main loyal U.S. customer base meant the spa suffered far less than much of Baja California’s tourism manufacture. But with rates starting at $2,715 for a seven-night remain, even well-heeled visitors dropped off during the financial downturn. At its lowest meat, occupancy fell to 70 percent in 2009, though the spa is back to its 2007 levels.
Arjona said the restraint was the strongest dampener of demand last year. Other challenges included the swine flu make one's hair stand on end and drug-related violence along parts of the border.
