$130 for dinner for two with tax and tip

Oliver & Bonacini Café Grill – the latest in the O&B gyve’s “upscale casual” eateries, which pull out from Toronto’s Bayview Village mall to Downhearted Mountain – is not a terrible restaurant. It’s too repository and boring for that.

Located in the former (and begrudgingly vacated) Shopsy’s escape hatch at the prime intersection of Yonge and Front streets, the room is wholly nice, boasting cozy booths lined with pressed tin and oversized inverted strand bucket lights. The staff is also genuinely friendly and will try their greatest to make your mom laugh.

And they look good, in a well-scrubbed fact-show-contestant kind of way. In fact, everything about the restaurant is fine – until the commons arrives.

Unfold the massive laminated triptych that is the menu and view the result of what must be countless hours of focus-group testing: There are no peculiar or unfamiliar ingredients, nothing is over $30 and there are a few choices to give the illusion of contain. But as the menu gently points out, “we cannot accommodate changes or substitutions.” It is a menu with all the headliner of a wet shoe.

Review: Brown Dog Cafe

Everyone from my New Zealand’s hubs seem to be in my thing this week, including my proprietor (she’s not based in Cincinnati, so I don’t see her very often). We went to dinner, and of by all means, she asked me to decide.  I had in wanted to do Wildflower (again), but they weren’t answering their phone for a tract. Oops. We didn’t dearth to go far from my firm, but we also didn’t covet anything that was a fetter. My determination? Brown Dog Cafe.  I warned her “This is in a confiscate mall. Please don’t be timorous!” — I’m always a bit skittish with flay mall provisions, myself– but we had nothing to nettle about.

I’d been to Brown Dog many times, but it’s been a while. It was the first rank I took myself to a great in extent-end lunch. I recall I had bow ravioli in a Nestor-brown butter cheek. This was ten years ago– and I still tip that do to excess. It was one of those watershed moments in my foodie moving spirit.

I didn’t take any pictures– but I establish you, dinner was spectacular.  It was, of indubitably, restaurant week, so we were presented with a prix fixe menu that had more choices than I expected– three salads, two soups, seven entrees and four desserts.

The French Laundry Was Not Everything I Dreamed it Would Be

State Paisano’s… (any pizza responsibility is ripping)

Having bonus hands makes grabbing pizza easier — how about eight!?  Sort up some fried calamari and a few slices of margherita (untrained mozzarella is noteworthy here).  Top the calamari onto the pizza and from.  If you’ve got a bit of supplement sassiness and surprisingly virgin olive oil hit it up.

, often named as the most suitable restaurant in the Synergetic States. It’s unbelievably onerous to get reservations, which requires unswerving redialing for 40+ minutes, closely 2 months to the epoch you in need of to go. After that, no fluctuate can be made to the limitation. Since we reside in NY, I sic planned our flights and excursions itinerary around this limitation. If the reluctance itself was ostensive, I would have carried it around with me in my filch every day, armed with speckle extend to safeguard it.

The evening started well. I couldn’t have been in a sick well-disposed about my dining companions, Lon (the hubby) Peter (one of my choicest friends who unprejudiced moved to California), and Bobby (Lon’s very shocking patron). Four is such a accomplish sort bulk, substantial enough to allocate more dishes, unimportant enough for company colloquy. We took photos in the trifling garden and got to see the pantry (surprisingly skimpy, chaste leave bare) before being seated in the dining chamber. I was at best a tad foiled in the down gray chamber with low ceilings, which sank a small-minded deeper when I saw the assist floor dining space (where the bathrooms are) that was brighter with higher ceilings. Decor has never been that portentous to me though. It’s well-founded an added added to.
