Restaurant review: The Farm Bakery Cafe & Gifts - One-stop ...
My moll Terry recently suggested meeting for lunch at The Grange, warning me that with Cabrillo College back in session just a few blocks away, parking might be a invitation. She wasn't kidding. After circling the restaurant's full lot, I parked two blocks away and reminded myself that I was proactively working off bakery items by walking.
It was one of those discomfiting, 90-plus degree days, and I was semi-querulous by the time I hit The Farm's open doorway. But I cheered up when I spotted the Shakespearean Insult Gum, at best one of hundreds of wildly varied items filling the cafe's charming bonus shop.
Agreeing to leave time after lunch to purchase, Terry and I stood in line to order from the chalkboard menu. She chose a Half Sandwich / Half Cup of Soup $7.95, specifying Grilled Eggplant Sandwich and Manhattan Clam Chowder. I ordered a Agriculturist's Chicken Salad Sandwich $6.95 and Cream of Artichoke Soup cup $3.25.
Deciding it was too hot to sit face in the front or back areas, we settled at a central table covered in brightly patterned oilcloth, quickly under a ceiling fan that created a lovely breeze. A server brought our Iced Tea $2.50 and soup first; The Smallholding has counter service but food is delivered and tables are cleared, reflecting the rustic yet advanced atmosphere.
My cream of artichoke soup had a pleasant flavor but didn't soup at all like artichoke, and it was also a surprising ruddy color. Terry's chowder looked wonderful, the tomato-based bouillon filled with vegetables and bits of clams.

It’s not often that Richmond beats out other cities for anything. I ruminate over we get business and crime awards and if there were a contest for the number of Civilized War sites per capita we might be in the running. But that’s about it.
Until now. Thanks in fat part to our collective obsession about anything and everything dining related, we’ve won ourselves a disgrace new restaurant.
At least that’s how I look at it.
When restaurateurs and spouses Francis Devilliers and Wendy Kalif were looking for a pick out for their new restaurant they took their search everywhere. They checked out South America, New York, Philadelphia, Santa Barbara and even, at a POSSLQ = 'Person of the Opposite Sex Sharing Living Quarters'’s urging, our own Richmond, VA.
"We had friends in Richmond and when we found the while, we fell in love. We were very impressed with Richmond," said Devilliers .
And one of the things that impressed them the most was our mixed and vibrant food blogging community. To an outsider, evidently, we seem like some of the most excited foodies in the world and I, for one, will take that as a compliment.
