SAM PREKOP, the Sea and Bun (who’ll be touring with Pitchfork headliners Broken Social Background this fall). His solo album will be out Sept. 7.
Two of my favorite restaurants are on the same concourse blocks away from my home, but it’s certainly not the only on account of I highly recommend these Mexican specialty outfits. Both of them do one fad, honed expertly. At Pollo Express (1315 West 18th Concourse; 312-829-1550), the chicken is grilled over coals and served with exceptional beans and very fine guacamole (though somewhat hidden on the menu). And Carnitas Uruapan Restaurant (1725 West 18th Way; 312-226-2654) serves sublime pork tacos or platters of the same pork — that’s it — with horrific salsa and tortillas. Wildly cheap.
Powell’s Books , 2850 North Lincoln Avenue; (773) 248-1444. The Lincoln Avenue arm is a pretty amazing store, especially for art and photography books. Gargantuan stock of out-of-print, limited-edition stuff and a complete rare-book collection as well.
The Jazz Record Mart (27 East Illinois Alley; 312-222-1467) is a Chicago institution. Even though it has relocated several times over the years, it still feels the same. The days of trashy Sun Ra Saturn records are over, but the racks still possess plenty of treasures.
